Mi viaje misionero a Perú fue una bendición y exactamente lo que Jesús quería que experimentara. Fue toda una sorpresa y un viaje lleno de amor y comunidad. Primero visitamos un centro de ancianos donde bailamos, conversamos y alimentamos a las damas. Anhelaban la comunicación y la interacción de cualquiera. Mientras interactuaba con ellos, los miraba directamente a los ojos y se sentía como si estuviera hablando con mi familia, con mis abuelas. A través de esta experiencia, aprendí que el amor de Dios es íntimo y familiar porque, a pesar de conocer a estas damas sólo por un par de horas, sentí tanto amor hacia ellas y cercanía.
También encontré el amor y la alegría de Jesús mientras jugaba con los niños en el colegio. Las formas en que encuentran la felicidad a través de juegos y actividades sencillas me recuerdan cómo Dios se encuentra en la sencillez de la vida. De vuelta en los Estados Unidos, las personas tienden a llenar sus vidas con muchas actividades y distracciones, lo que conduce a la inquietud y el estrés todo el tiempo. Pero ser capaz de lanzar una pelota y correr con los niños por un tiempo me permitió utilizar mis dones dados por Dios de alegría y diversión que no había experimentado en mucho tiempo.
Trabajar alrededor de la escuela pintando los patios y las paredes también fue un tiempo de reflexión para mí. Mientras trabajaba, a veces entablaba conversaciones con mi equipo de FOCUS conociendo su corazón y su vida en casa. También me hacían preguntas personales que me obligaban a abrirme y reflexionar sobre los desafíos y las gracias con las que Dios me ha bendecido. Sin embargo, también hubo momentos en los que yo trabajaba en silencio y entraba en oración pidiendo a Dios que me revelara Su presencia y voz. Cada vez que rezaba esto, los niños se acercaban a mí y comenzaban a hablar, a hacer preguntas y a abrazarme. Durante estos encuentros con los niños, me di cuenta de que estaba encontrando claramente a Jesús a través de su inocencia y alegría.
Espero que mi experiencia en Perú haya sido sólo el comienzo de poner mi fe en práctica y de ser misionero en todos los lugares a los que me llevan. Oro para que pueda seguir viendo a Cristo en todo lo que hago y en todos los que encuentro.
My mission trip to Peru was such a blessing and exactly what Jesus wanted me to experience. It was all such a surprise and a trip full of love and community. We first visited a senior center where we danced, talked and fed the ladies. They yearned for communication and for interaction from anyone. While interacting with them, I would look directly into their eyes and it felt like I was speaking with family, with my grandmothers. Through this experience, I learned that God’s love is intimate and familial because, despite only knowing theses ladies for a couple hours, I felt so much love towards them and closeness.
I also encountered Jesus’s love and joy while playing with the children at the school. The ways that they find happiness through simple games and activities reminds me of how God is found in the simplicity of life. Back in the United States, people tend to fill their lives with many activities and distractions, which leads to restlessness and stress all the time. But being able to throw a ball and run around with the kids for awhile allowed me to utilize my God-given gifts of laughter and playfulness that I had not experienced in a while.
Working around the school painting the courts and walls was also a time of reflection for me. As I worked, I would sometimes engage in conversations with my FOCUS team by getting to know their heart and about their life back at home. They would also ask me personal questions which forced me to open up and reflect on the challenges and graces that God has blessed me with. However, there were also moments that I worked in silence and would enter into prayer asking God to reveal His presence and voice to me. Whenever I would pray this, children would come up to me and starting talking, asking questions and hugging me. During these encounters with the children, I realized that I was clearly encountering Jesus through their innocence and joyfulness.
Hopefully, my experience in Peru was just the beginning of putting my faith to practice and of being a missionary in all places that I am led to. I pray that I may be able to continue to see Christ in everything I do and in everyone I meet.
