Ver Perú y Arequipa por primera vez me hizo sentir mariposas. Las montañas y los volcanes eran más grandes que la vida. El idioma era diferente (pero también familiar), y la gente era hermosa. Estaba muy emocionado de venir aquí, y estaba listo para dar mi corazón y servir.
Lo que no me di cuenta al empezar la misión fue mi necesidad de recibir. La hospitalidad que he encontrado en las comunidades peruanas me ha impresionado. La amabilidad de los niños del colegio y los maestros hizo que mi corazón se sintiera cálido y tierno. Ser aceptado y acogido tan calurosamente por esta comunidad ha permitido que mi experiencia con las personas y con Cristo sea mucho mejor.
He visto mucho a Jesús en las personas con las que hemos estado esta semana. Encontrarlo en los niños del Colegio San Juan Apostol me ha recordado la belleza de la juventud y la alegría de ser juguetón como un niño. Es en estos encuentros que también recuerdo que debemos ser como niños para entrar en el reino de los cielos, como dice la Biblia. Las interacciones con estos niños me llenan de tanta felicidad y esperanza, y puedo sentir al Espíritu Santo trabajando dentro de ellos y dentro de ese maravilloso colegio.
También me he encontrado con Cristo en las personas con las que hemos trabajado durante esta misión. Desde nuestros conductores de autobús y cocineros hasta los hombres y mujeres con los que excavamos agujeros y aserramos árboles. Pude ver a Jesús en sus esfuerzos por ayudar a construir un mejor mañana.
Vi a Cristo en nuestras traductoras Lucía y Alejandra, porque sin ellas y su servicio a nosotros, nuestro mensaje no podría haber sido comunicado. La fuerza y la convicción de estas personas me han inspirado enormemente a hacer más por las personas que me rodean, como ellos lo hacen.
En conclusión, esperaba venir a Arequipa y dar, dar, dar durante mi tiempo aquí. Pero estaba muy equivocado con esa expectativa. He recibido muchas gracias de la comunidad aquí: amabilidad y hospitalidad de nuestros anfitriones, juventud y alegría de los niños, y la convicción de nuestras traductoras y constructores. En general, pude recibir mucho amor de esta experiencia, y estoy muy agradecido de haber encontrado no solo a estos peruanos, sino de haber encontrado a Cristo a través de estos peruanos durante esta semana. Dios bendiga.
Seeing Perú and Arequipa for the first time gave me butterflies. The mountains and volcanoes were larger than life. The language was different (but familiar too), and the people were beautiful. I was very excited to come here, and I was ready to give my heart and to serve.
What I didn’t realize going into the mission was my need to receive. The hospitality of the Peruvian communities I’ve encountered have blown me away. The friendliness of the school children and teachers made my heart feel warm and fuzzy. Being accepted and welcomed here so warmly by this community has allowed my experience with the people and with Christ that much better.
I have seen Jesus so much in the people we ‘ve been with this week. Encountering him in the children at San Juan Apostolate has reminded me of the beauty of youthfulness and the joy of being playful like a child. It is in these encounters that I also remember we must be like children to enter the kingdom of heaven, as it says in the Bible. The interactions with these children fill me with so much happiness and hope, an I can feel the Holy Spirit working within them and within that wonderful school.
I have also encountered Christ in the people we’ve worked alongside during this mission. From our bus drivers and cooks to the men and women we dug holes and sawed trees with. I could see Jesus in their efforts to help build a better tomorrow. I saw Christ in our translators. Lucia and Alejandra as well, because without them and their service to us, our message could not be communicated. The strength and conviction of these people have greatly inspired me to do more for the people around me as they do.
In conclusion, I expected to come to Arequipa and give, give, give during my time here. But I was very wrong with that expectation. I have received so many graces from the community here – friendliness and hospitality from our hosts, youthliness and joy from the children, and conviction to selfnessness from our translators and builders. Overall, I was able to receive so much love from this experience, and I am very thankful to have encountered not only these Peruvians, but to have encountered Christ through these Peruvians during this week.
