Decidí hacer este viaje de misiones a mediados del otoño pasado después de ver publicaciones en las redes sociales sobre “Misiones FOCUS”, y después de hablar con una buena amiga sobre su experiencia en el mismo viaje hace dos años. No estaba realmente segura de en qué me estaba metiendo, pero me sentí tan atraída que decidí que realmente no tenía más remedio que decir «¡Sí!». A pesar de que tenía dudas y temores, de luchar para recaudar fondos para el objetivo monetario y pasar por condiciones estresantes de viaje, Dios proporcionó paz, generosidad y seguridad de una manera que no podría haber predicho.
Experimentar la belleza de Arequipa y la alegría de nuestro grupo misionero han confirmado por completo mi decisión de venir aquí, y realmente sé en mi corazón que aquí es donde Dios desea que esté esta semana. Toda esta semana ha estado llena de encuentros con Cristo y el amor de mi Padre. Primero sentí su amor cuando llegamos a Arequipa, ya que los anfitriones nos dieron la bienvenida a su casa y a la magnifica casa de retiro. Nos han atendido muy bien, y la hospitalidad y la serenidad que se ofrecen aquí en Santa Luisa son una bendición.
También he visto a Cristo en mi grupo misionero la semana pasada. Escuchar sus testimonios y presenciar su fuerte amor por Jesús y las formas en que trabaja en sus vidas me está transformando. Las amistades que he formado han llenado mi corazón y esta comunidad familiar me ha traído una alegría inmensa. Además de esto, trabajar en el patio de juegos sensoriomotor esta semana ha sido difícil, pero extremadamente gratificante. No solo nos ha acercado a todos, sino que nos ha permitido crecer en el amor por los estudiantes del colegio a medida que ofrecemos nuestro trabajo a Cristo por ellos. Él nos está proporcionando energía, fuerza y motivación, y no puedo esperar a verlo terminado.
Por último, he visto el rostro de Jesús en los ojos brillantes y profundos de los niños del colegio. Sus sonrisas, risitas y su deseo de conocernos y amarnos ha cambiado la forma en que veo mi vida en Kansas. Me han inspirado mucho con sus acogedores abrazos, besos y conversaciones.
En el primer salón de clases que visitamos, me senté al frente con 4 o 5 niñas que me hicieron preguntas sobre mi origen y si tenía alguna «mascota». Una de las chicas me mostró una canción que escribió y le dije que a mí también me encantaba cantar, y que estudiaba música en la universidad. Naturalmente, tenían curiosidad y me pidieron que cantara, así que pensé en lo primero que podía «Let it go» de Frozen. Mientras les cantaba en un idioma diferente al de ellas, escuchaban con los ojos muy abiertos y una gran sonrisa. Pidieron una canción más, y no pude decirles que no, así que continué.
Después, me preguntaron si yo era una cantante famosoaen casa, ¡jaja! Fue realmente precioso y una interacción increíble. Estaba agradecida con mi Padre por la oportunidad de usar el regalo que me dio como una herramienta para expresar amor y consuelo a esas dulces niñas. Me abrazaron y aguantaron por un rato y me regalaron calcomanías que pusieron por todo mi brazo. Creo que esta historia, junto con muchas otras, muestra el amor y el cuidado de Jesús, quien ve nuestros dones y nos aprecia a nosotros mismos. Pude mostrarles su amor y, a su vez, me revelaron su amor y alegría.
Arequipa siempre tendrá un lugar especial en mi corazón. Es el lugar donde experimenté profunda alegría entre la simplicidad, inmensa belleza entre la pobreza, y vi la mano de Dios trabajando directamente en mi vida y en la vida de los demás. Mi oración es que nuestro Señor nunca me deje olvidar la alegría infantil de los alumnos del colegio San Juan Apostol y que pueda vivir una vida impulsada por mis encuentros con mi creador esta semana. Cuán verdaderamente agradecida estoy por haber tenido esta oportunidad y esta experiencia que me cambió la vida.
I decided to go on this mission trip in the middle of this past fall after seeing postings on social media about FOCUS Missions, and after talking to a good friend about her experience on the same trip two years ago. I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into, but I felt so pulled to go that I decided that I really had no choice but to say “Yes!” Even though I had doubts and fears, struggled a bit to fundraise the monetary goal, and had to undergo stressful travel conditions, God provided peace, generosity, and safety in ways that I could not have predicted.
Experiencing the beauty of Arequipa, and the joy of our mission group, have completely confirmed my decision to come here, and I know truly in my heart that this is where God desires me to be this week. This whole week has been full of encountering Christ and the love of my Father. I first felt his love when we got to Arequipa, as the hosts welcomed us to their home and to the gorgeous retreat center. We have been taken care of so well, and the hospitality and serenity offered here at Santa Luisa are such blessings.
I have seen Christ also in my mission group this past week. Hearing their testimonies and witnessing their strong love for Jesus and the ways that he is at work in their lives is transforming me. The friendships that I have formed have filled my heart and this family-like community has brought me inmense joy. On top of this, working on the sensorimotor playground this week has been tough, but extremely rewarding. Not only has it brought all of us closer to each other, but it has allowed us to grow in love for the students at the school as we offer our labor up to Christ for them. He is providing us energy, strength, and motivation, and I can’t wait to see it finished.
Lastly, I have seen the face of Jesus in the sparkling, deep eyes of the children at the school. Their smiles, giggles, and desire to get to know us and love on us has changed the way that I see my life back in Kansas. They have inspired me so much by their welcoming hugs, kisses, and conversation. In the first classroom that we visited, I sat at the front with 4 or 5 girls who ask me questions about where I was from and if I had any “mascotas” or pets. One of the girls showed me a song she wrote and I told her that I loved to sing too, and that I studied music in school. Naturally they were curious and asked me to sing, so I thought of the first thing I could “Let it go” from Frozen. As I sang to them in a language that was different than theirs, they listened with wide eyes and big smiles. They asked for one more song, and I couldn’t say no to them, so I continued.
Afterwards, they asked if I was a famous singer back home, haha! It was truly precious, and an amazing interaction. I was grateful to my Father for the opportunity to use the gift he gave me as a tool for creating whity and expressing love and comfort to those sweet girls. They hugged me and held on for a while and presented me with stickers up and down my arm. I think this story, along with many others, displays the love and care of Jesus, who sees our gifts and cherishes our very selves. I was able to show his love to them, and in turn they revealed his love and joy to me.
Arequipa will forever have a special place in my heart. It is the place where I experienced profound joy amongst simplicity, immense beauty amongst poverty, and saw the hand of God working directly in my life and the lives of others. My prayer is that our Lord never lets me forget the child-like joy of the students of San Juan Apostolate and that I may live a life driven by my encounters with my creator this week. How truly grateful I am to have been given this opportunity and life – changing experience.
