Este verano tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en Arequipa, Perú con un grupo de estudiantes universitarios. Consistimos en estudiantes en su mayoría del oeste de los Estados Unidos, pero también con algunos del medio oeste y el este. Juntos, pintamos y enseñamos en la escuela San Juan Apóstol. Pasamos de un aula a otra, alternando entre pintar y enseñar historias bíblicas. Las experiencias de alegría en la comunión cristiana y la solidaridad a pesar de las obvias diferencias culturales y lingüísticas continúan impresionándome, especialmente al regresar a los Estados Unidos. Dios se hizo presente durante nuestro tiempo en Perú en las oportunidades que se nos dieron para vivir nuestra bella fe católica, practicar nuestro español y hacer nuevos amigos del Perú. Así es como los otros misioneros de los Estados Unidos distinguen nuestro viaje a Perú como un cambio de vida y uno que yo atestiguaría cambiaría la vida de alguien si realmente se entrega al servicio de sus hermanos y hermanas y la voluntad de Dios.

This summer, I had a chance to work in Arequipa, Peru with a group of fellow college students. We consisted of students mostly from the Western United States but with a few from the Midwest and the East as well. Together, we painted and taught at San Juan Apostol school. We moved from classroom to classroom, alternating between painting and teaching Bible stories. The experiences of joy in Christian fellowship and solidarity despite obvious cultural and linguistic differences continues to impress upon me, especially upon returning to the United States. God made Himself present during our time in Peru, and the opportunities we were given to live our beautiful Catholic faith, practice our Spanish, and make new friends from Peru as well as fellow missionaries from the United States distinguishes our trip to Peru as life-changing, and one that I would attest will change anyone’s life if they truly give themselves to the service of their fellow brothers and sisters and the will of God.
