Comenzamos cada día con una hora de oración que realmente afirmó nuestra identidad de Hijo e Hija. Era evidente que comenzar con la oración realmente cambió la forma en que veíamos nuestro día. Al recibir el amor de Dios por nosotros en la misa y en la adoración, pudimos entonces estar presentes en nuestra misión del día, y esperamos poder reflejar algo de ese amor a los demás. También fuimos testigos del poder de la oración intercediendo por las familias durante las visitas a los domicilios, rezando el rosario en español y yendo a misa en español. La oración es muy unificadora.
(Mónica) Conocí al Señor en la sencillez, pero profundidad de la relación. Aunque la barrera del idioma dificultaba la comunicación con las abuelas, los niños y las otras personas de Arequipa, aprendí la sencilla belleza de contemplar la presencia del otro. El Señor me permitió encontrarme con Él en los rostros de los que me rodeaban mientras pasábamos tiempo juntos. Jugamos al tag, bailamos, sonreímos, nos tomamos de las manos, ¡y estas cosas fueron muy lejos!
También encontré al Señor en la alegría de la comunidad de amigos de Víctor y Alejandra. A través de su gran hospitalidad, fuimos recibidos generosamente en la casa de Victor, y en su comunidad llena de fe. ¡Rezamos, cantamos y bailamos, y nos regocijamos de ser hijos de Dios juntos! A través de la música, y la voluntad de otros de enseñarme a bailar, me encontré con el deseo de Dios de que yo estuviera alegre, y sentí como si Él me recordara que hay mucho por lo que estar alegre.
(Lucas) Tres palabras que describirían mi experiencia en Perú son pobreza, ternura y alegría. Fue tan poderoso encontrar a algunas de las personas con las que trabajábamos en su pobreza y necesidad. Hay tantas cosas en mi vida que doy por sentadas y olvido apreciar. Ver a personas que no tienen agua, o una cocina convencional, realmente me abrió los ojos a las muchas bendiciones de mi vida. También me mostró la importancia de mostrar a cada persona su dignidad tratando de ayudarla en su necesidad. Todos tenemos profundas necesidades espirituales. Todos nosotros, como seres humanos, necesitamos saber nuestra dignidad de Hijos e Hijas de Dios y que somos muy amados. Ver la pobreza física en las personas con las que trabajábamos también me ayudó a darme cuenta de la pobreza espiritual que existe, especialmente en Estados Unidos. A menudo estamos atrapados en el consumismo y el ajetreo de la vida cotidiana. No necesitamos a Dios para nada físico, y sin embargo hay una falta de gozo y paz. Mientras estuvimos en Perú, pudimos ver tanta alegría y ser testigos de la alegría que proviene de tener a Dios en el centro. Los amigos que hicimos del Movimiento de Vida Cristiana, los niños y maestros de la escuela, e incluso los trabajadores que nos ayudaron a hacer proyectos en la escuela mostraron una gran alegría contagiosa.
El último tema para mí del viaje fue la ternura. A través del proceso de cuidar y ayudar a las personas con las que estábamos trabajando, me estaba dando cuenta de lo tierno que es el amor de Dios para mí. Me hizo bueno y me ama tiernamente. Siento que he podido aceptar un poco más en mi corazón el amor de Dios por mí y esto es un gran don. Espero seguir volviendo a la realidad de su tierno amor.
We started every day with an hour of prayer which really affirmed our identity as his Son and Daughter. It was evident that beginning with prayer really did shift and change the way we saw our day. In receiving God’s love for us in the mass and adoration, we were then able to be present in our mission of the day, and hopefully we were able to reflect some of that love to others. We also witnessed the power of prayer through interceding for the families during home visits, praying the rosary in Spanish, and going to mass in Spanish. Prayer is very unifying.
(Monica) I met the Lord in the simplicity, yet depth of relationship. Though the language barrier made communicating with the grandmothers, children and others of Arequipa difficult, I learned the simple beauty of beholding the presence of the other. The Lord allowed me to encounter Him in the faces of those around me as we would spend time together. We played tag, danced, smiled, held hands, and these things went a long way!
I also encountered the Lord in the joy of Victor and Aleja’s community of friends. Through their great hospitality, we were generously welcomed into victor’s home, and into their faith filled community. We prayed, sang, and danced, and rejoiced in being children of God together! Through the music, and the willingness of others to teach me to dance, I encountered God’s desire for me to be joyful, and felt like He reminded me there is much to be joyful about.
(Luke) Three words that would describe my experience in Peru are poverty, tenderness, and joy. It was so powerful to encounter some of the people we were working with in their poverty and their need. There are so many things in my life I take for granted and forget to appreciate. Seeing people who don’t have running water, or a conventional kitchen, really opened my eyes to the many blessings in my life. It also showed me the importance of showing every person their dignity by trying to assist them in their need. We all have deep spiritual needs. We all as human beings, need to know our dignity as Sons and Daughters of God and that we are greatly loved. Seeing the physical poverty in the people we were working with also was helping me realize the spiritual poverty that exists, especially back in the U.S. We are often stuck in consumerism and the busyness of everyday life. We don’t need God for anything physical, and yet there is a lack of joy and peace. While we were in Peru, we got to see so much joy and witness the Joy that comes from having God at the center. The friends we made from the Christian life movement, the kids and teachers at the school, and even the workers who helped us do projects at the school exhibited great joy that was contageous.
The last theme for me from the trip was tenderness. Through the process of caring for and helping the people we were working with I was realizing how tender God’s love is for me. He made me good and tenderly loves me. I feel that I was able to accept a little more in my heart God’s love for me and this is a huge gift. I hope to keep coming back to the reality of his tender love.
